St Philips Honour Roll Print Page

The brass honour roll commemorates those from the congregation who died in service or were killed in action during World War One and World War Two.  It is also in remembrance of Chaplain McVittie, a former minister of the church who died in 1947. 

The congregation of St. Philip's Presbyterian Church, Newcastle, gathered outside the church after the morning service yesterday for the unveiling of a memorial plaque to the church's war dead. The bronze plaque, set in a wall of the church porch, perpetuates the memory of 17 men who died in World War I., four men who died in World War II., and Chaplain A. R. McVittie, former minister of the church, who died in 1947. A book recording the names of men from the church who served in the last war was presented to the Minister (Rev. G. Reid) by the Session Clerk (Mr. W. Henderson).

The book is finely bound and printed. It was designed by Mr. Reid, in collaboration with Messrs. E. K. Lingard and R. Madden.  Mr. Reid unveiled and dedicated the plaque. The ceremony was attended by the Lord Mayor (Ald. Quinlan) and aldermen, the District State R.S.L. representative (Mr. S. E. Boyle), the President of Newcastle sub-branch of the R.S.L. (Mr. A. C. Hartney) and President of Merewether sub-branch (Mr. P. Rymer). Mrs. A. R. McVittie (Mr. Mc Vittie's widow) and Mrs.Thomas McVittie (sister-in-law) attended.
