The hall was erected in 1921 to commemorate those from the district who served in World War One, but in succeeding years additional plaques have been added to commemorate other conflicts.

The new Memorial Hall which is being built on a central site, will serve to perpetuate for many years to come, the memory of the Gerringong men who fought in the great war. Two large marble tablets each 10 x 5, with the names suitably inscribed, will be placed on the front wall facing the street, and will be visible to the many thousands of people who in the course of time will pass along the main South Coast road now known as "The Princes Highway." Four foundation stones each 2½ x 14 will be laid on Wednesday next, 24th. instant, the gentlemen selected to lay the same being Mr. Jas. Sharpe (Mayor), Mr. Alex. Campbell, Mr. D. F. Bailey and Mr. T. A. Noble.

On Saturday last, a soldiers' memorial hall, erected at a cost of over £1000, was opened at Gerringong by Brigadier-general Cox, in the presence of a large gathering from all parts of the surrounding district. The building was designed by Mr. Varney Parkes, who gave his services free. It is simple yet ornate, and on the left of the facade is a marble tablet containing the names of 50 local men who enlisted and returned, and on the right is another tablet bearing the names of the 14 men who made the supreme sacrifice. In addition to Senator Cox and Colonel Fuller, Major Alex Hay and Mr. M. F. Morton made speeches, as well as several local men.
