The monument commemorates those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.
Behind the obelisk is a semi-circular wall containing multiple marble plaques listing the names of those from the District who served in the South African (Boer) War, World War One and World War Two. A nearby flagstaff and deck gun accompany the memorial.
Funds were received in 2013 to restore the names on the Boer War and World War One honour rolls. A further plaque was added to commemorate the ANZAC Centenary 2014 - 2018.

This plaque has been placed in recognition of one hundred years since the First World War.
This war helped define Australians as people and encapsulate our unique national identity :
Courage, mateship, sacrifice, generosity, freedom and a fair go for all.
This is a Cessnock City Council initiative in conjunction with the Cessnock RSL Sub Branch
