A new park will be established for the community to reflect and honour more recent veterans. The Murgon RSL subbranch received a federal grant of $4542, on 1 September, to create a new park in Murgon to reflect on the service of veterans and to mark the Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The park is meant to be a quiet spot where veterans, those close to them, and the community, can come for quiet contemplation. It will be on Gore Street, at a section of the old railway corridor near the South Burnett Council building.
The new memorial park, the name of which is still to be determined, is being established to acknowledge the conflicts after the Second World War. There will be a plaque to represent each conflict since the Korea War, with a replica of the Long Tan Cross to commemorate the Vietnam War, and a bronze plaque to acknowledge The Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II.
Murgon RSL Sub Branch president Kevin Gill said the RSL would plant about 20 trees alongside the plaques. “The RSL Sub Branch feels that it will be a fitting addition to acknowledge the Queen’s Jubilee, along with her war service in a memorial garden which also recognises those men and women who fought for our country during her time in the service of the Commonwealth,” he said. “I think it’s a great benefit to our community. It helps with recognition for the people that have served that allows people to have the lifestyle we have today.”
The park will start to come together on 4 October, with plans to have an opening ceremony on 23 November. There will be dignitaries, special guests, a barbeque, and the public will be welcome to attend.
Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien congratulated Murgon RSL Sub-Branch on achieving the $4542 grant to recognise the Queen’s 70 years of service to Australia while creating a new park to reflect on the service of veterans since World War 2. “The Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee program, an initiative of the former Morrison-Joyce Coalition Government, puts up to $15.1 million on the table to community-based tree plantings,” Mr O’Brien said. Mr O’Brien said the Queen’s Green Canopy program would create a legacy of tree planting nationwide, increasing the canopy while celebrating Her Majesty’s Jubilee and her military history. “This new memorial park is being established to acknowledge the conflicts post World War 2 where no memorials currently exist.

On Saturday 10 December, the Murgon community opened the Veterans’ Memorial Park – a peaceful space to honour post-World War II veterans.
An initiative of the Murgon RSL Sub Branch, the park was opened by State Member for Nicklin, Rob Skelton MP and Murgon RSL Sub Branch President, Kevin Gill.
The opening followed more than 12 weeks of planning and construction and included a tribute to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with the unveiling of a dedicated plaque among more than 30 juvenile and mature trees planted in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years of service to Australia.
A prominent feature of the park is the installation of a replica Long Tan Cross, which has been erected in honour of those who served and lost their lives in the Vietnam War. Commemorative plaques have also been installed, honouring wars and conflicts in Vietnam, East Timor, Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as acknowledging Peacekeeping Forces.
