Wanaaring & District Soldiers Memorial HallPrint Page
The Memorial Hall commemorates those from the district who died in service or were killed in action in conflicts in which Australia has been involved.
Next week will be one in which big things will be started for Wanaaring, and these things will take the form of big and modern buildings. The memorial to the soldiers who fell in battle, from the citizens of the town, the new Memorial Hall, and an expanded store for Mr. Bent will be commenced by contractor, Mr. Pat Winkley. The citizens have acquired a vacant block opposite the hotel on which land the Memorial Hall will be constructed. The building will be a very modern one and will cost in the vicinity of £2000 when completed it is estimated. The plans drawn up for the job are very good ones, and Mr. Winkley stated after he had seen them that the hall would be equal to any dance hall in Australia. Mr. Winkley should know, for he has travelled in all States, and was doing work in the construction of St. Andrew's Hospital, Melbourne, for six years. It is estimated that the hall will hold '1000' dancers. The floor will be of tongue and joint secret nailed construction. The supper room at the rear will be 30 feet by 12 feet, and will accommodate 250 people at one sitting. In the hall itself there will be seating accommodation right round the hall, and there will be a handrailing dividing this from the dance floor. Dancers may go on to the floor through any of ten entrances. The space beyond the handrail will be 10 feet wide. The band stand will be in keeping with the rest of the building. It will be 02 square feet in area and will stand in one corner. The front appearance of the hall will be a very fine one. In fact Mr. Winkley described the front as a beautiful one. The hall has been drawn up on American ideas, and the windows will be American type. Cooper louvres will also be used in the construction. The work on this fine building will commence on Tuesday.
