The gate pillars were erected in 1954 to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in conflicts in which Australia has been involved.

The executives of the Kandos R. S.L. and the Comrnunity Association, at a meeiing last week, decided on the erection of war memorials at the gateway to the community centre. The meeting was convened by Councillor Williamson. The memorials, which are to be built of limestone, are to be erected at the eastern entrance and are to be equipped with legacy torches. A tentative plan, which was submitted by Cr. Williamson, was adopted in general. With modifications as required. The Shire engineer. Mr. Ennis, who was present, agreed to take charge of operations, with the president of the R.S.L. and the Community Association act as advisers.

A record crowd gathered in brilliant sunshine last Sunday to witness the ceremony of dedication of the memorial gates at Kandos. All activity in the town ceased as the president of the local R.S.L. sub-branch, Mr. W. Junge, unveiled the obelisks dedicated to those who had laid down their lives for their country. The scene, a brilliant one, brought to mind not only thoughts of the past (of death and suffering) but of the future (of life and better living). The brevity of the ceremony made it all the more impressive. All who took part executed their duties with precision and dignity. Contingents of schoolgirls were positioned in front of the gates, the girls from the Convent to one side and those from the Public School the other. Behind them were many ex-servicemen led by permanent Army men, Gunner D. Musgrove and Private A. Dominey, and National Service Trainees P. Turner, A. Oldfield, G.Sinnett and R. Williams. Cr. N. J. Saville (president of Rylstone Shire Council) spoke of the sacrifice made by those who had laid down their lives in defence of their country and ideals, then Cr. Jack Williamson, who was responsible for the idea of the shrine and who had done so much to have it erected, called upon Mr. Junge to perform the dedication.

Wreaths were laid at the foot of each pillar by "Digger" L. Musgrove (R.S.L.), Margaret Lawson (Legacy), Pam Cohen accompanied by Pauline Foodey and Margaret Moore (Convent School), Gwen Mulholland, Beatrice Haley and Renati Achenbachas (Public School), Cr. Seville (Shire Council), Messrs. M. Carrett and F. Bingham (Urban Committee), Mr. G. Ward (Kandos Works), Mr. W. Hodge (Charbon Works), Messrs. F. McManus and J. Honeysett (Band), Mr. G. Hawkins (Community Association), Mr. S. Robbins (Henbury Golf Club), and tiny Elizabeth Pokrzywa, beautifully dressed in Polish national costume and escorted by Messrs. J. Kuchta and S. Osiemski. After this Mr. Junge conducted the remembrance ceremony.
