Power to purchase the Red Cross building at the 111 A.G.H. for the sum of £250 was granted to the chairman of the Campbell Town War MemorialCommittee (Mr. N. A. Nicolson) at a public meeting at Campbell Town on Wednesday. The building will form part of the town's war memorial. Advice was received from the Minister of Lands and Works (Mr. Brooker) that the Government would give up to £1500 on the £ for £ basis provided the memorial met with the approval of the people.
It was stated that 12 acres of land could be purchased from the trustees of the Church of England for £85 an acre. This could be used as a new recreation ground and park, and that a site on the main street could be purchased for a communty hall. It was not agreed which of the two would be more suitable, but Mr. Nicolson was empowered to obtain an option over each site. It was hoped that the money could be raised by public subscription, but failing that it was suggested that a carnival be held. The public subscription was headed by the Warden (Mr. Crosby Lyne) with £100.
