Long Plains Roll of HonourPrint Page
The wooden honour roll commemorates former students of the Long Plains School and Shannon Sunday School who served in World War One. The names of those who served in World War Two were added at a later date.
It was originally hung in the Long Plains School from 1918 until the school closed in 1973. It was then relocated to the Long Plains Memorial Hall
LONG PLAINS, April 26. On Thursday afternoon, April 25th, a number of people assembled at the Long Plains school to witness the unveiling of the Roll of Honour, on which was placed the names of the brave lads who had gone to the front and who in times past had attended the Long Plains school and Shannon Sunday School, some of whom had made the supreme sacrifice. Mr C. W. Burnard presided. The school children sang the National Anthem and "The Song of Australia." The Rev. M. Tresize, of Mallala, gave a helpful address, and Mr Gold, Inspector of Schools, also spoke a few words in honor of the brave lads. Mrs F. Pritchard, whose son had made the supreme sacrifice, was then asked to unveil the roll of honor, which she did with a few well-chosen words. The children sang " God bless our splendid men." Mr Burnard thanked the speakers for their addresses.
