St Luke`s Anglican ChurchPrint Page
The church was erected as a war memorial to commemorate those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. The foundation stone of the church was laid on the 19th June 1954.
It was opened and dedicated by Archbishop Reginald Charles Halse.
"As St. Augustine laid the foundation stone of the first church in England on a grassy hill set in just such a rural setting, encircled by grand and lovely mountains, so, too, are you, the people of Kenilworth performing the same ceremony — a ceremony made possible by the growth and splendour of the Church of England." said Canon E.R. Chittenden (Rural Dean of Wide Bay), in his address after laying the foundation stone of St. Luke's War Memorial Church in Kenilworth on Saturday last. After the service, luncheon was served in the public hall at Kenilworth.
The Vicar of the Mary Valley Parish welcomed visitors and parishioners and thanked all who had worked to make the occasion possible. Mr. Fuhrer (Warden of St. Peter's, Gympie) congratulated the members of the Kenilworth Church of England on their work, and also in accepting the new modem design more suitable to the Queensland climate recommended by Rev. Williams (Vicar of the Mary Valley Parish). Visitors from Kandanga and Imbil were also present. The offering on the foundation stone amounted to £140 12 9.
