Ulmarra Memorial Park Print Page
The park was established to commemorate those who served in World War One.
The Memorial Park at Ulmarra was officially opened on Monday by Captain Anderson, of the N, C.S.N. Co., in the presence of a large gathering of townsfolk. In introducing Captain Anderson, Mr. F. J. Yalden, chairman of the Park Committee, extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, the Mayor and Mayoress of Grafton, and to Captain Anderson. He apologised for Ald. Maxwell, of South Grafton, and Ald. Grainger, of Maclean, who were unable to be present, but wished them every success; also for Mr. J. Forsythe. Continuing, the chairman said that some 2 years ago a party of citizens had interviewed Sir Allen Taylor in an endeavor to get this piece of land for a Memorial Park.
On that occasion Sir Allen had informed them that his co-directors were very Scotch, and it was doubtful if the land could be procured. Later on the land had been given to the citizens of Ulmarra, in fee simple. After the appointment of the committee, it had taken them seven months to secure the right to the foreshore for the purpose of removing the Rowing Club shed. There had been a number of delays which were unavoidable, but they had decided to go on with opening on Armistice Day, although the park, was not quite completed. He wanted everyone to remember that the park was not the property of anyone, but the public of Ulmarra. It belonged to them, and he wanted them to look after it and see that it was properly cared for.
Ald. Fitzgerald (Mayor of Ulmarra) joined with the chairman in welcoming Mr. and Mrs. Macpherson and Captain and Mrs. Anderson. He also tendered an apology from Mr. F. Turnbull, who had always been an ardent supporter of the park, but was unable to be there that day. He was glad to think the opening had been of sufficient importance to bring the Mayor of Grafton, the capital city of the North Coast, to their little bush township of Ulmarra. He thought it was fitting to to have Captain Anderson there to perform the opening because the N. C.S.N. Co. very generously, indeed, had donated the land for the park for the use of the people of Ulmarra for all time. It was the most fitting memorial they could have, being a lasting memento to those who went away to fight. It was up to the people of Ulmarra to make the best use of the gift so generously given.
