R.A.A.F. National Service
1951 - 1957
This plaque commemorates the 20,000 Australian young men who completed National Service Training in the Royal Australian Air Force. Many of these continue to provide valuable service in both the Permanent and Citizens Air Force. It especially honours the memory of all those who paid the supreme sacrifice.
National Service was undertaken through nineteen intakes, to supplement the strength of the R.A.A.F. during the Korean War and Malayan Emergency. National Servicemen were drawn from all walks of life and were trained in technical trades, aircrew, general duties, medical and aerodrome defence.
The major training units were:
No 1 NSTU Amberley No 2 NSTU Richmond No 3 NSTU Canberra
No 4 NSTU Wagga Wagga No 5 NSTU Laverton No 6 NSTU Point Cook No 7 NSTU Pearce
The scheme saw training wings established at various R.A.A.F. bases, including: Garbutt, Archerfield, Rathmines, Williamtown, Schofields, Bankstown, Frognall, East Sale
