Fire & Rescue Service
Fire response teams were formed with the formation of the RAAF in 1921. Initially those responding to incidents resulting from crashes were made up from various aircraft trades. The mustering of specialist firemen was formed in late 1956 with the appointment of two mebers who had completed civilian training. No 1 course commenced at Pt Cook on the 29th January 1957 with 15 members graduating on the 7th March 1957. Notable achievements have included the extremely dangerous Fuel Tanker Fire at RAAF Base Richmond and the Townsville Sugar Terminal Fire which took three days to control. This service has seen overseas active service in Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, East Timor, Middle East and has responded to major crash scenes and disasters in these countries as well as Australia.
The Fire Training School remained at RAAF Pt Cook until January 1957 when it was relocated to Amberley as RAAF Security and Fire School. Students are trained in all aspects of Aircraft and Structural Fire fighting.
This memorial is dedicated to all past and serving members.
