Legana Memorial HallPrint Page
The hall commemorates those who died in service or were killed in action and all those who have served their country.
Sir, - At the end of the war a committee was formed at Legana to raise funds to build a war memorial hall in honour of those from the district who had fallen, and to all who had served their country. In the first wave of enthusiasm a sum approaching £900 (including promised Government grant) was collected. Since then, apart from periodical meetings of the committee, nothing has been done. In fact, the project seems no farther ahead than it was at the first meeting. One reads of suitable memorials being erected in other districts with smaller communities than this and less finance.
Is this district not proud of and grateful for the sacrifices made for them, or has the present committee outlived its usefulness? We are all aware of rising costs, but if a start had been made when the money was first collected most of the work could have been done with the amount in hand: Now the building will cost three times as much. Surely it is possible for residents to get together and form a young, active committee that will get on with the job and put up a building that will not only serve as a memorial but a place where the social and recreational activities of the district can be enjoyed. -- RESIDENT.
