The monument commemorates those from Pinkenba and District who served in World War One. It records the names of forty-two men who enlisted, eight of whom are listed as fallen.
During World War One, the Pinkenba wharves were the point of embarkation for many Australian troops, including members of the Light Horse. Pupils from the local school visited the wharves to farewell soldiers from the district.
A triangular area at the intersection of Main-road and McBride-road, Pinkenba, was the centre of an inspiring gathering on Saturday, on the occasion of the unveiling by his Excellency the Governor of a memorial stone to the lads from that sector of the Toombul area who had enlisted in the war. The memorial stone was garlanded with wreaths in honour of the eight men from the district who had lost their lives at the war. In all 42 men enlisted from the Pinkenba area.
