Dedication
Australia Remembers
1945 - 1995
This plaque marks the approximate
site of the first Hospital Ship to
visit Newcastle during World War II.
Because of Japanese submarine
presence outside Sydney in May 1945,
H.M.A.H.S. Wanganella was diverted to Newcastle and
made history as the first Hospital Ship to enter
Newcastle Harbour.
Medical Staff came from Sydney by train and on
18th May, 1945 embarked close to where "The Brewery "
now stands. Included with these were members of the
2 / 5th and 2 / 9th A.G.H., some of whom were
Newcastle residents.
