The monument commemorates those who lost their lives in the Cardross tragedy of 2006.

Eleven teenagers were hit by an out of control car driven by Thomas Towle while walking by the side of the road in February 2006 and six of the teenagers were killed.

Towle was found not guilty of culpable driving but was found guilty of multiple counts of the lesser charge of dangerous driving and sentenced to 10 years jail. The tragedy caused a mixture of shock grief and anger in the local community.
