The gates at the church commemorate Ernest Whitfield, a former police magistrate and coroner in the colony of Tasmania who died in 1923.

Ernest Whitfield was also a well-known historian and was meticulous in his research into the early settlement of Tasmania from 1803, and painstakingly recorded both verbal and written recollections from residents. These were the basis of a series of lectures he gave in 1897.
