Plaque and adjacent post at the site of what was recorded as the world`s tallest tree was erected by Rotary as a Thorpedale Centenary Project in 1975.

According to “Guinness Book of Records” (London 1977, p 3, a Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans) tree that once grew at Thorpdale South in Gippsland, Victoria, holds the record for the tallest tree in the world for which official and authentic records exist.

This tree stood 114.4 m (375 feet) in height and the mountain ash was felled by farmer Bill Cornthwaite back in 1884 and solemnly measured and verified by his brother George, a government surveyor.
