The remains of Robert O`Hara Burke and William John Wills were brought to Melbourne by A. W. Howitt and on their grave was placed a monolith of Harcourt granite.

The monument was built by public subscription and a further plaque was erected by the Old Colonists Association to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their expedition
