The plaque marks the crash site of USAAC Kittyhawk P-40 which crashed in 1942.

During a return flight from Canberra to Laverton, USAAC P-40E Kittyhawk crashed into a mountain near Aberfeldy in Victoria in bad weather on 10 March 1942. The wreckage of the Kittyhawk was not found until New Year's Eve 1948 by a man walking his dog. Captain Joseph Potter McLaughlin of the 20th Pursuit Squadron of 4th Air Depot Group USAAF at Laverton was killed in this tragic accident and his remains were taken to R.A.A.F Station East Sale.
