The monument commemorates four police officers who died when their light aeroplane plane crashed as it was about to land at Newman Airport in January 2001.

Those killed were Constable Gavin Ashley Capes, Senior Constable Philip Ruland, First Class Constable David Dewar and Senior Constable Donald Everett.  All four men died instantly on impact and the crash remains the worst loss of life in a single accident in the history of the Western Australia Police.
