A plaque commemorates the centenary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Summertown Institute in 1884. The institute was officially opened on the 28th January 1885.

Summertown October 6. The quiet little township seems to go ahead. The ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the Summertown Institute was performed recently by Mr. Roland Rees. After the ceremony there was a good tea and entertainment, both of which were greatly enjoyed, the entertainment being particulally successful. When finished the building will be quite an ornament to the district. If the rate of progress continues as at present the institute will soon be opened.
