The sculpture commemorates the 150th Anniversary of Melbourne Medical School.

In 1862, the University of Melbourne established a medical school with an intake of three students, becoming the first university in the southern dominions of the British Empire to teach undergraduate medicine.

This work symbolises the accelerating complexity of medical knowledge and practice from 1862 to 2012.  

Enhanced ways of observing the body and probing the mind expand our understanding of human health, the doctor as carer is constant.

Commissioned by a group of 1972 graduates in commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Melbourne Medical School
