In memory of the officers and men of the 2/22nd Battalion A.I.F. and attached units of "lark Force"

On January 1942, this small unsupported garrison at Rabaul, New Britain , was overwhelmed by a huge Japanese invasion force.

In the succeeding months, some escaped to an Allied base, 160 were massacred at Tol Plantation and Gasmata ; many became prisoners of war.  All other ranks who were captured, together with civilains taken into custody, were shipped out of Rabaul on the "Montevideo Maru".

An allied submarine sank this unmarked Japanese prison ship in July 1942.  There were no survivors.
