The monument commemorates the 503rd Parachute Regiment, a United States Army unit which trained at Gordonvale during World War Two. It thanks the people of Gordonvale for their hospitality during this time. 

The regiment  arrived in Townsville, in north Queensland in Australia on 1 December 1942.  They arrived in Cairns the next day and were then transported to their Camp at Gordonvale. They were the first US airborne regiment to arrive in the Southwest Pacific Area in World War Two.

The non-commissioned officers (NCOs) and members of the Company participated in jump-master training from 31 May to 24 July 1943, They spot-jumped on White Field, at Gordonvale.
