The monument commemorates the crew of Lockheed Hudson Bomber A16-162 of 32 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force (R.A.A.F.) which crashed into some mangroves in the Hinchinbrook Channel near Cardwell during a storm in May 1942. It also acknowledges the actions of Sergeant Fletcher and the people of Cardwell in rescuing the crew.

Sergeant Graham Stanley James (416260) aged 24 years, was killed in this crash and was buried at the Tully Cemetery.
