The Battle of the Coral Sea was commemorated with the planting of three young Blackwood trees and the placing of plaques at ANZAC Park dedicated to World War Two cruisers the HMAS Hobart, HMAS Perth and HMAS Sydney.

During the Battle of the Coral Sea, the HMAS Hobart withstood an attack by eight Japanese twin engine torpedo bombers and 19 heavy bombers and shot down three enemy aircraft.

On 19 November 1941, 130 miles off the north-west coast of Western Australia, the HMAS Sydney engaged the German armed merchant cruiser Kormoran.  The Kormoran was disguised as a merchant ship flying the Dutch flag.  As a result of this engagement, the HMAS Sydney was lost with all 645 officers and men.
