HMAS 'Maitland`, Newcastle`s naval base, was on this site from 1 August 1940 to September 1946. It shared the site with the army`s Camp Shortland Naval Services based at "Maitland" and nearby Newcastle Customs House (from 28 August 1939) included an examination service to check all arriving ships, the naval control service which cleared ships leaving the port, the harbour entrance minefield, and control of the minesweepers "Uki"and "Bermagui" based in Newcastle Harbour.
