Dear Monument Australia visitors, we are a self-funded, non-profit organisation, dedicated to recording monuments throughout Australia. Over time the costs of maintaining this website have risen substantially (in fact they are probably larger than those of many companies who exist for profit). In the past we have borne all the costs associated with maintaining the website but we are now having difficulties in paying the monthly expenses.
If Monument Australia is useful to you, please make a donation to keep this historical and educational resource available. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Monkerai Honour RollPrint Page

Monkerai Honour Roll commemorates those who served in World War Two.
A welcome home to ex-service men and the unveiling of the Honour Roll was held at Monkerai on Friday night last, 8th March. A very large crowd was present, there being visitors from Dungog, Stroud, Stratford, and Raymond Terrace, and they filled the hall to capacity.
The function commenced at 8 p.m. The ex-servicemen present were Messrs. K. Burrage, E. Martin. E. Dean, and H. Murrell, who followed the chairman, Mr. H. Barkwill, into the hall to take their seats at one of the two tables that were so wonderfully decorated by the ladies. As they entered the hall the people stood and sang "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows."
After the supper had been partaken of, there was the toast of "The King." The Chairman then outlined the object of the gathering and added that he was pleased to be welcoming the boys home and wished them all the best. Others that were called upon to speak were Messrs. W. Russell, W. Burrage, S. Noble, C. Atkins, and Rev. A. G. Gibbins, of Stroud, who wished the boys well.
Telegrams of apology for absence from exservicemen R. Frost and N. Titcume were read by the chairman. He presented to each returned boy a sum of money and in turn each suitably responded. Mr and Mrs. Latham, who both just recently been discharged from the services and who have come to take up residence on Monkerai, were welcomed by the chairman. Mr. Snape, ex-schoolteacher at Monkerai, was called upon to unveil the Honour Roll. Mr. Snape said that he came to Monkerai in 1914, near the commencement of World War No. 1, and was here for the unveiling of the Honour Roll for that war. He went on to say that as a teacher of the boys he round them to possess good qualities and considered it a great honour to unveil the Honour Roll. As the Roll was being unveiled the audience stood and sang the National Anthem.
