Fallen Lifesavers National Memorial Print Page Print this page

The Fallen Lifesavers National Memorial is dedicated to Australian lifesavers who died in service or were killed in action  in World War One.

The sculpture shows a digger alongside a surf lifesaver – seen 20 times their actual size – next to a flagpole looking across the ocean. A wall behind the sculpture, unveiled in 2015, lists the names of up to 500  lifesavers from around Australia.

There were more than twenty Surf Life Saving Clubs in Australia at the outbreak of World War One, and when the call went out for volunteers, a significant number of these volunteer club members signed up to serve in the war.
