The monument commemorates those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.  It lists the names of the soldiers who died in service or were killed in action in World War One and those who served and returned. 

It originally included a soldier statue and was unveiled near the site of the Council Chambers in September 1922 by the Honourable J. W. Evans, C.M.G.
