The gardens commemorate those who served in World War One.  During World War One, Port Elliot was a venue for soldiers on recreation. The gardens were established as a community project for soldiers on leave. The memorial trees were planted after the war as a tribute to the local soldier’s contribution and includes a tree planted to fallen New Zealand soldiers.

Trees have now been planted in the garden to commemorate those who have served in other conflicts in which Australia has been involved.  24 bronze plaques commemorating the fallen soldiers were placed in the garden in May 2012.
