The Thornton Memorial Hall was erected in 1953 as a memorial for those who served and sacrificed in two World Wars. The hall was refurbished in 2008.

At a meeting held at the Thornton Cafe on Thursday, October 9th, for the purpose of discussing the disposal of monies held in Trust by the trustees of the Upper Thornton Hall, which was attended by 21 past and present residents of Thornton, who expressed their view as to how the money should be disposed of. Messrs L. Nicholas, S. Savage, R. Robb, J Girdwood, A. J. Girdwood and B. P. Coller were appointed to act with the Trustees (Messrs. L. Beever, S. Sawers and G V. At a subsequent meeting held at Mr Beever's home by the appointed committee it was decided that £100 be donated to Alexandra Hospital to provide 1 maternity bed, 1 surgical posture bed, 1 colour safe heater to be used in conjunction with the maternity and surgical bed. To bear the inscription -"Presented by the Upper Thornton Hall Trust fund. In memory of the old residents who erected this hall."  £25 each to the Church of England and Presbyterian Churches at Thornton, and £25 each to the Roman and Methodist Churches at Alexandra. The balance after all accounts have been paid to be used to supply an Honor Roll and pay for materials required for the erection of the Memorial Hall at Thornton. The Trustees were thanked for their efforts and congratulated them on the way they had carried out their duties.
