The monument commemorates John, William, Elizabeth and Michael Murphy, who were children of shepherders who were burnt to death when the shepherd`s hut caught fire on 9 February 1863.

The burial site remain unmarked until a subsequent owner of the property became aware of the story. He erected a fence around the site and planted pines, and the Ararat Historical Society erected the plaque.
