The plaque commemorates the official opening of Gladstone - Moura Short Line Railway in March 1968.
The Moura Short Line was constructed to provide a more efficient means of transporting large volumes of coal from the planned expansion of the Callide and Dawson coal fields to the deep-water port of Gladstone in the mid 1960's. As coal volumes grew a direct line to Gladstone was proposed, and the 151 km Moura Short Line opened in 1968, being the first 'S' (Special) class line in Queensland, with an 18 tonne axle load at the time.
Formerly know as QR National the rail network was privatised in 2010 and is now known as the Aurizon Network.
