The plaque commemorates Victoria Cross recipient and former Mosman park resident James Woods who died in 1963.
James Woods was cited for firing and throwing bombs from an exposed position, after he and two comrades from the South Australian raised 48th Battalion captured and held a German nest of six machine guns in northern France on September 18, 1918. For this action he was awarded the Victorian Cross.
However, he was gassed during the conflict and in 1938 doctors in Perth recommended he retire from his hard work at the family’s Swan Valley vineyard, after which the seven-child family moved to 25 York Street, Mosman Park.
