The lookout commemorates Raymond Rex, former Douglas Shire Councillor.

Rex was an illustrious pioneer and colourful character from Hobart. RD, as he was commonly called, was a councillor and chairman of the Douglas Shire Council for 45 years. He was the man largely responsible for having the Captain Cook Highway completed from Mossman to Cairns during The Depression.

He met much opposition to this road as the locals feared that people would spend their money in Cairns rather than in Mossman and Port Douglas. During Raymond's term on the council, the original power and water supply from Rex Creek was established. Likewise, he had a significant influence with the construction of the Rex Highway from Cassowary to Julatten.
