The monument commemorates Ian Alexander Christie Wood (1901 – 1992) who was a Senator for Queensland in the Federal Parliament, Alderman and Mayor of Mackay, tourist promoter and philanthropist.
Born at Mackay, Queensland, he was educated at state schools before becoming a travel agent. He served on Mackay City Council, including some years as mayor, 1930–1933, 1943–1953. He was also President of the Queensland Local Government Association and the Mackay Chamber of Commerce. In 1949, he was elected to the Australian Senate as a Liberal Senator for Queensland. He remained a Senator until his retirement in 1977, taking effect in 1978. Wood died in 1992.

Alderman Mackay City Council 1927 - 30, 1939 - 43, 1955 - 58 and 1970 - 73
Member and President of the Mackay Chamber of Commerce for a substantial number of years
Instrumental in development of Mackay Airport.
Instrumental in the declaration and development of Eungella National Park.
Dedicated substantial areas of land, including Annie Wood Park in memory of his mother.
Made significant contributions to the Whitsunday Anglican School.
Made significant contributions to the Helipad at Mackay Base Hospital.
Donations from his estate benefited many charities.
