The monument commemorates explorer, Edward John Eyre who passed through Port Lincoln in August 1839 on his exploration of the west and north boundaries of Eyre Peninsula and in October 1840 on his epic journey to Western Australia. It is located in Eyre Park named in his honour.
The memory of explorer Edward John Eyre will be perpetuated by a monument being prepared by the Bishop Estate Progressive Association at Port Lincoln. The president, Mr. E. C. Jeanes said a bronze plaque had been made at a cost of £150 under the direction of the National Geographic Society and would be fixed to a large granite rock at the Eyre Memorial Gardens. It was expected the unveiling ceremony would be held later this year. The association proposes to plant the surrounding area with lawn.

Edward John Eyre
Passed through Port Lincoln August 1839 on his exploration of the west and north boundaries of Eyre Peninsula and in October 1840 on his epic journey to Western Australia.
Eyre (Eyria) Peninsula was named in his honour by Governor Gawler In 1839.
He was the first to traverse Australia from East to West.
