The reserve commemorates John Mathwin for his services to the cities of Brighton and Holdfast Bay.

John Mathwin OAM (1919 - 2004) was an Australian politician. He was the Liberal member for Glenelg in the South Australian House of Assembly from 1970 until his defeat in 1985.
