A model of the Siding Springs Telescope commemorates the bicentenary of the arrival of the First Fleet in Australia.
The Bicentenary marked the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney in 1788. Captain Arthur Phillip (1738–1814), commander of the First Fleet, established the foundations of a British colony at Sydney Cove on the 26 January 1788.

This model of the Australian National University's 2.3m telescope located at Siding Spring Observatory was constructed in 1987 by welding students at the Orana Community College, Coonabarabran Campus as an Australian Bicentennial Project to
commemorate the nation`s Bicentenary in 1988.
This project was sponsored by the N.S.W. Bicentennial Secretariat.
