The Memorial commemorates the loss of seventeen miners at Box Flat Colliery in 1972.

On the 31st July 1972 in Box Flat mine at 2.47 am, 17 miners were killed. Fourteen were underground and three were at the surface of the pithead. Twelve others were seriously injured, three hospitalised, two seriously hurt, and one man died 14 months later directly as a result of injuries.

The incident was the worst mining disaster in Ipswich's history.  After the explosion the mine closed and the tunnel's entrances were sealed.  The miners' bodies were never retrieved from the mine.
