The Rotary Club of Ballarat erected the monument to commemorate the rowing and canoeing events of the 16th Olympiad, contested on Lake Wendouree in 1956.
The monument is topped by the 5 Olympic circles supported by a boomerang symbolising the invitation to return, and a plaque bears the names of the countries which competed
