Cairns Massacre Memorial Trees Print Page Print this page

Eight frangipani trees planted on the first anniversary in memory of the victims of the Cairns massacre in 2014.

The slain children included seven siblings and their cousin, and were aged from two to 14. Raina Mersane Ina Thaiday, 38, the mother of seven of the children, was charged with their murders. It is one of Australia's worst domestic mass murders.

In April 2017, Queensland's Mental Health Court ruled that Thaiday was of "unsound mind" at the time of the killings, and thus (under Queensland law) not criminally responsible. As of May 2017, she is being held for treatment at The Park Centre for Mental Health.

The house where the crime occurred has been demolished.
