The monument commemorates the centenary of the founding of the Melbourne Athenaeum. Additions were made to the stone to commemorate the sesquicentenary in 1989 and list the names of office bearers and committee members.

To celebrate the centenary of the Melbourne Athenaeum, a special addition has been made to the commemorative stone on the main stairway of the institution. This records the date of the foundation of the institution, November 12, 1839, of the erection of the first building in 1843, of the laying of the foundation stone of the main hall on July 1, 1872, and of the reconstruction under which the hall became the Athenaeum in 1924. The completed history in stone will be unveiled, by the president (Mr. G. A. Fielding) tomorrow afternoon at 4.15.
