AN ODE TO THE THEATRE
(Dedication of the Civic Centre Theatre, Mount Gambier May 14th, 1982)
There will be those who`re eager to cast doubt
And sneer at public funding of arts
Who think that roads and sewers have more clout
And prior claim on money, minds and hearts
But they ignore the lessons of the past
For in those towns and cities built to last
The common joys enriched the common earth
The joys that artists bring to those who`d hear
And see - in picture, statue, music, song,
Dance or drama - a bright mirror making clear |
New knowledge, what we are, where we belong.
So let this lovely theatre serve those ends
and make of all its audience, all its friends.
