The ceramic sculpture commemorates the origin of the Surf Lifesaving Movement.

In 1906, Lyster Ormsby was one of a group of young men concerned about the number of lives being lost in the surf. They decided to form a surf life saving club at Bondi, the first in Australia (though that is disputed by Bronte, which formed a Life Saving Brigade without the word "Surf" in 1903) and therefore the first in the world . Their clubhouse was a tent on the dunes.
