Greta Army & Migrant Camp Memorial Print Page
The wall commemorates the Greta Army and Migrant Camps which existed between 1939 and 1961.
The Greta Army Camp was established in 1939 at the beginning of the World War Two. During World War Two, over 60,000 Australian soldiers trained at the camp.
The army camp was repurposed in 1949 as a migrant camp housing approximately displaced persons and migrants from Europe. It became the second largest migrant camp in Australia, and during its 11 years of operation, over 100,000 people passed through the camp, with the most at any one time being 9,000.
The old bricks on the top of the wall are from one of the camp's buildings.
