Scented Garden of AttungaPrint Page
The scented garden commemorates 100 years of service to the community by the property Attunga. The garden was established for the visually impaired and was opened in 2001 during the Centenary of Federation.
Attunga was a mansion built by Benjamin Burford in 1900 on 4.5 acres in the area that became known as the suburb of Toorak Gardens. The mansion was sold and Attunga was purchased by Otto von Rieben and his wife in 1907, but having no children, he gave Attunga to the Burnside Council in 1944 with the proviso that the house and garden be preserved as a hospital and nursing home. The garden had been laid out under his guidance in Edwardian style. The hospital was completed in 1956, and the Burnside Trust in the 1990s, established a scented garden for the visually impaired.
