Prior to 1950 there were 1,250 children buried in unmarked graves in the Northam District. This garden was establised to remember them all.
The grave of Lila Shah, was chosen as the site for the garden as being symbolic of our multicultural town today.
Lila, the daughter of an itinerant Afghan hawker was buried here in 1916 after she died of Diptheria. Her body faces Mecca and the Arabic inscription on her monument reads :
"It is excellent to comment there is no other object of worship but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah."
This stone was donated by Quality Memorials,
Northam, 1993.
